Ferns are some of the oldest living plants on the earth. Watching these Interrupted Ferns develop day after day, I felt as if I was witnessing something being born.

They tend to appear in early spring, always in groups, and are sheathed in a fabric-like cover.

As they reach skyward, the sheath gradually disappears exposing these tiny, bright green leaves that initially seem to be thousands of miniature grapes.

The ones above reminded me of Yoda.

And then the leaves begin to unfurl.

Because ferns are humble—they don’t draw attention to themselves like many of the other spring blooms—it’s easy to overlook them. Next year, do yourself a favor. Find some as they begin to emerge from the ground and watch them carefully for a few weeks. You’ll be amazed.
